Haunted House Movies

Haunted house movies are one of my favorite sub genres of horror.  They have large scary looking houses, run-down estates with graveyards, hidden passages, creepy characters, ghosts and lots of spooky atmosphere.  Here are a few of my favorites:

13 Ghosts:

A family inherits what proves to be a haunted house, but a special pair of goggles allows them to see their ghostly tormentors. Starring: Charles Herbert, Jo Morrow and Martin Milner.  Directed by William Castle. (1960)

Burnt Offerings:

Haunted house chiller from Dan Curtis has Oliver Reed and Karen Black as summer caretakers moving into gothic house with their young son. The catch? The house rejuvenates a part of itself with each death that occurs on its premises.  Starring: Karen Black, Oliver Reed and Burgess Meredith (1976)

The Changeling:

A man staying at a secluded historical mansion in Seattle, finds his life being haunted by the presence of a spectre. Starring: George C. Scott, Trish Van Devere and Melvyn Douglas  (1980)

The Woman in Black:

A young lawyer travels to a remote village where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman is terrorizing the locals.  Starring Daniel RadcliffeJanet McTeer and CiarĂ¡n Hinds (2012)

The Conjuring

Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse.  Starring: Vera FarmigaPatrick WilsonLili Taylor and Ron Livingston.
See full review here.

Rose Red:

A group of people with psychic powers are invited to spend the night in a haunted house in Seattle.  TV miniseries. Starring: Nancy Travis, Matt Keeslar and Kimberly J. Brown  (2002)

·         Diary of EllenRimbauer:

Set at the turn of the century, this is the tale of Ellen Rimbauer who just received this mysterious mansion as a wedding gift from her new husband. Her husband is a Seattle oil tycoon who has a dark past which Ellen eventually finds out about. She becomes fearful of her husband when she learns of some disappearances of people that were close to him. Also there are some unexplained happenings at the Rose Red Mansion that might have a connection to these people who have disappeared. Now Ellen is worried she might be next. Prequel to Rose Red.  Starring: Lisa Brenner, Steven Brand and Kate Burton  (2003)

A young girl sent to live with her father and his new girlfriend discovers creatures in her new home who want to claim her as one of their own.  This movie does have a couple gory scenes (including the first few minutes) but the movie as a whole is a great haunted house film.  Starring:  Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce and Bailee Madison  (2010)

A family's home in a new housing development is haunted by a host of ghosts. Starring:  JoBeth Williams, Heather O'Rourke and Craig T. Nelson  (1982)

Dr. Markway, doing research to prove the existence of ghosts, investigates Hill House, a large, eerie mansion with a lurid history of violent death and insanity.  Starring: Julie Harris, Claire Bloom and Richard Johnson (1963)

A team consisting of a physicist, his wife, a young female psychic and the only survivor of the previous visit are sent to the notorious Hell House to prove/disprove survival after death. Starring: Roddy McDowall, Gayle Hunnicutt and Pamela Franklin  (1973)

A woman who lives in a darkened old house with her two photosensitive children becomes convinced that her family home is haunted.  Starring: Nicole Kidman, Christopher Eccleston and Fionnula Flanagan  (2001)

A composer and his sister discover that the reason they are able to purchase a beautiful gothic seacoast mansion very cheaply is the house's unsavory past. Starring:  Ray Milland, Ruth Hussey and Donald Crisp (1944)

A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where an evil and spiritual presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from the past and of the future.  Starring:  Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall and Danny Lloyd (1980)

During the final days at the Yankee Pedlar Inn, two employees determined to reveal the hotel's haunted past begin to experience disturbing events as old guests check in for a stay.  Starring: Sara Paxton, Pat Healy and Kelly McGillis (2011)

  1. Love the Haunted House Genre. Good list, I've seen all of them but one.

I would also add 'House' and 'Night of the Demons' (both versions).

  4. All major studios look to popular films to remake when it would actually make more sense to redo a film that originally failed. That way you could improve on it.
